‘Toast of Holywood’ – Holywood YOUnite
Festival Awards Ceremony
The culmination of a week’s worth of activities aimed
at uniting Holywood against hate and encouraging residents to embrace diversity
took place on Saturday, 27 November. Through music, food, sport and debate
people of all ages have been challenged to think about good relations issues
such as equality, tolerance and respect for difference. The hard issues of
sectarianism and racism and how they affect the community have also been addressed.
North Down Borough Council, Redburn Loughview Community Forum, Holywood Shared
Spaces and Services Consortium, Sullivan Upper School, Priory Integrated
College and Marcin Krzewicki were all presented with Unite trophies for their
ongoing support for the Unite against Hate campaign
by the Equality Commissioner Kit Chivers.
Early Years Programme Helping to Tackle Sectarianism
Experts in early childhood from across the world were in
Northern Ireland recently to hear the results of an in-depth research project
that Early Years - the organisation for young children, hopes will lead to more
effective measures to tackle racism, sectarianism and bullying in Northern
Ireland’s still deeply divided society. The research found robust evidence
that the Media Initiative improved young children’s awareness and
attitudes towards cultural differences. The report also shows that the Media
Initiative has had an impact in developing children’s ability to
recognise emotions in others, instances of exclusion and the ability to
empathise with how exclusion makes others feel. Further information, Executive
Summary and the full report are available HERE.
