Belfast Pride 2010
The annual Belfast Pride Parade took place, during the afternoon, on Saturday 31st July 2010. This, very amateur, video - using a Nikon P100 - cannot do justice to this splendid, colourful spectacle (originally recorded in full 1080p HD and, here, in highly-compressed mpg format). The almost totally-ignored presence of a few collectively-psychotic DUP protesters, and lunatic fringe, atavistic, homophobic, fundamentalist neanderthals, made absolutely no impact whatsoever. (It seems reasonable to posit that these, rather pathetic, viscerally-malign people are full of irrational fear of those who are, or who dare to be, different; perhaps, they are not entirely sure of their own sexuality - hence, their shockingly vituperative and, often, horrifyingly vicious reaction to people who are not in conformance with their narrow 'views'. To paraphrase the words spoken by Hamlet's mother, Gertrude, "The homophobe doth protest too much, methinks").
This gay pride event is now, apparently, the largest parade, of its type, in Ireland - and Belfast should take pride in this.
Most certainly, it presents a more positive view of Belfast (and its citizens, including boring 'straights', like the recordist, who turned up, in their thousands, to witness, and support, the event) than the usual portrayal of sectarian mayhem and bigotry (not to mention homophobia).
Thanks to all you gays for giving us some much-appreciated 'joie de vivre'!
